Hear bestselling author Olivia Spooner in conversation with author and broadcaster Sonya Wilson discussing her latest bestselling WWII historical fiction novel, The Songbirds of Florence.

Olivia's hugely popular historical fiction is based on true events, uncovering the wartime stories of New Zealand women and reshaping them to resonate with a contemporary audience. Audience Q&A to finish.

About the book:

The Songbirds of Florence by Olivia Spooner 1942: Addy and Margot join the NZ Women's Auxiliary Army Corps in Cairo, supporting soldiers fresh off the front line. As war intensifies and the 'Tuis’ are relocated to Italy, friendships and resilience are pushed to the limit. Based on true events.

Meet the author and chair:

Olivia Spooner is the number one bestselling author of two historical fiction novels, The Girl from London and The Songbirds of Florence. She is also the author of two contemporary novels, A Way Back to Happy and A Bumpy Year. Olivia lives with her family in Auckland, New Zealand, and is the owner of independent bookstore The Booklover Bookshop in Milford, winner of 2024 NZ Bookshop of the Year.

Author and broadcast journalist Sonya Wilson is the founder and director of the children's book charity Kiwi Christmas Books. Her children's novel Spark Hunter won the NZSA Best First Book Award at the 2022 NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. It has just been re-released along with its brand-new sequel, published in July 2025, The Secret Green.

Transport, parking and accessibility:

Free and paid 'pay by plate' street parking is available on Remuera Road and surrounding streets, including St Vincent Avenue. If you are using public transport, the closest bus stops are 7417 and 7414 outside and opposite the building on Remuera Road. See AT's Journey Planner for route details.

There are two mobility parks on St Vincent Avenue, close to ramp access into the library building, and an accessible toilet.
